Looking to the future
Step into the year 2032
1. Prepare your interviewees
  • Find two or three volunteers - preferably people who are still at school, college or university, that is, people who have not yet started work.
  • Ask them to think about what would happen to where they live if average temperatures went up by two or three degrees.
  • If they live at, or near to sea level, ask them how a one meter rise in sea levels would affect the area.
  • What about agriculture - could the same plants be grown if the temperatures were higher, and the amount of rainfall went down.
  • How might severe effects such as drought or flooding in nearby areas, or countries affect them?
  • What about animal life, or forest cover, or farm animals? Would these be affected?
These are just a few things to think about.

2. Conduct the interviews
  • Now ask them to describe five ways in which life would be different 25 years from now.
  • Get them to think about
    • the direct impact of climate change
    • the indirect impact, such as how transport may have changed over the years, as people changed to low-carbon economies.
  • What about the food they eat - would they still be able to get foods from all around the world?
  • Where would they take their holidays?
  • How would they heat their homes?
  • From their answers draw up a scenario what life will be like in 25 years.
