Vattenfall 'Combat Climate Change!' A National Geographic competition
1. Who May Enter: All students aged 14 to 19 years, in school and living in Europe, except National Geographic Society employees and their families.

2. 'The Owners' of the competition are NGTI Limited, of Shepherds Building East, Richmond Way, Shepherds Bush, London, W14 ODQ and Vattenfall AB, of Sturegatan 10, SE-162 87 Stockholm, Sweden. The competition is open to anyone except those employees and family members of National Geographic Television International and National Geographic Society and affiliates.

3. Competition Subject: The Challenge All competition entries must provide evidence of having considered current global energy and climate issues as outlined on the
www.nationalgeographic.com/combatclimatechange web site. Each entry will be in the form of a project that outlines how the entrant would provide a sustainable alternative energy solution with particular regard to their local communities. Each entry submission must consist of no more than 1,500 words in total and based around the following structure:

a) Proposal summary: This should be no longer than 200 words and should explain briefly: which global energy problem you have chosen to confront, why you have chosen it, how it applies to where you live and a short synopsis of your proposed solution.

b) Problem, cause and consequence: In this section you will need to look at the major environmental issues currently facing the world. Describe in more detail how one of these problems relates to your own country, the effects it has and how you think it could be changed. You should highlight what you believe are the causes of this problem and the consequences it has on your country or locality. You should then propose a solution and illustrate the beneficial effects this solution would have.

The judges' decision will be final in determining whether the winning entry has accomplished the brief.

4. Format: Entries must be in WORD document for online submission.

5. Submissions: Entry is online only. Entrants should include their name, address and a nominated contact telephone number or email address. All successful entrants will be notified using their nominated means of contact. Entries should be uploaded to the entry form on the Combat Climate Change Competition website.

6. Copyright: By entering your project into the competition, you grant to NGTI Ltd. and Vattenfall AB a non-exclusive, royalty-free, irrevocable license to use and reproduce the Project content, your name and photographic image for any purpose in connection with the competition including, but not limited to, the following purposes:
  • judging the competition
  • display on the www.nationalgeographic.com/ combatclimatechange web site
  • publication within National Geographic Magazine, or inclusion within National Geographic's or Vattenfall AB's marketing and promotional materials
  • For use in any other NGTI Ltd and Vattenfall Media or press
7. Other competitions: A project that has already won a prize in another competition is not eligible for entry.

8. Judges: These will be appointed by the Owners to choose the winners. The Owners' decision on all matters relating to the competition is final, and no correspondence will be entered into concerning the competition's judging and organisation. There can be no recourse to litigation. Should the quality of entries fall below the standard required, the Owners reserve the right not to award prizes.

9. Notification: The winners will be notified by end September 2008. The winner will be the entrant who in the sole determination of the judges has submitted the most compelling use of an existing or original idea relating to energy and climate issues. If the chosen winner(s) is/are not available to participate on the prize trip on the dates selected by National Geographic or are not able to fulfil the Earthwatch participation criteria, the judges reserve the right to award the prize to one of the other finalists. No entries will be returned. The winner will be published in an issue of National Geographic Magazine European, Finnish, Polish, Swedish, and Danish editions. NGTI Ltd. Reserve the right to change the time of publication. NGTI Ltd. Reserve the right to add additions of the National Geographic Magazine to this list.

10. Liability : All entries are sent at the entrant's risk. The Owners regret they cannot accept liability for any loss or damage of any submissions entered in the competition (howsoever caused) nor for any other loss or damage resulting there from.

11. Closing Date : Entries must be submitted online by 15th May 2008.

12. Governing Law : These Terms and Conditions shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales. Disputes arising here from shall be exclusively subject to the jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.

13. General Agreement : Submission of an entry to the contest automatically constitutes the contestants acceptance of all the conditions set forth in the above rules. Entrants not complying with the above rules will be disqualified.

14. Prizes : The overall winner(s) and accompanying teacher win a place on an Earthwatch Volunteer Expedition to Puerto Rico's Rainforest currently scheduled for the 27th of December to the 2nd of January 2008. A maximum of four student places and one accompanying teacher place will be awarded. If the chosen winner(s) is/are not available to participate on the prize trip on the dates selected by National Geographic, the judges reserve the right to award the prize to the one of the other finalists. Winners must speak English to participate in the Expedition and have medical clearance. Minors will require parental authorisation to participate on the trip. Runners-up will be able to win a fantastic camera phone and National Geographic handy tips books about camera phone photography.

Finalists : Finalists will be judged in each local country by representatives selected by National Geographic magazine and Vattenfall.
