The challenge
Your climate. Your future.
Climate change is one of the greatest challenges mankind has ever encountered. We are now regularly experiencing extreme weather conditions such as flooding and droughts. Severe storms are devastating whole areas, glaciers are melting, and the number of endangered species is rising each year.

How we respond now will affect the future of our planet.

National Geographic, in association with the energy company Vattenfall, wants you to come up with an idea as to how you would promote sustainable solutions to help combat climate change. Imagine that there is a fund which supports projects aimed at improving and protecting the environment and which assists sustainable development.

Tell us your idea for a project that could have an impact in terms of improving the environment and help to combat climate change. Your project should take into account the current climate and energy issues and also outline the steps you would take to implement your idea.

Your idea for a sustainable energy solution can range from scientific, cultural/social, political, or business measures. It is your challenge to persuade us why the fund should support your project by explaining how it would have both a beneficial local and global impact on climate change.

Some tips to get you started
Ask Yourself...
  • What causes climate change both worldwide and in your area?
  • What are the alternatives available to you?
  • What is your solution?
  • How can you make change happen?

  • Perhaps you are shocked by the amount of energy being wasted in houses across the world by people leaving their appliances on all day and night; or maybe you are fed up with people jumping in their car to go just five minutes down the road.

What are the judges looking for?
Here are some clues to what the judges will be considering when it comes to looking at your proposals:
    Structure and clarity of presentation
Are your ideas ordered in a clear and understandable fashion? Are your illustrations and diagrams well presented and relevant to the text? It may help to focus your responses around the following structure:
    Problem – Cause – Consequence – Solution
Make sure you have a good balance of illustrations/diagrams and text.
    Background knowledge
Can you show evidence of research into climate change and sustainable energies? Have you thought about the global implications of your project?
    Practicality
Would your ideas work, and could they be put into action? A solar panel on the planet Mercury just isn’t going to happen (yet)!
    Originality, creativity and innovation
Have you thought around the problem in an original way? Are your ideas fresh and exciting? Could your proposal provide extra benefits to your community and country outside of the environment?
